Iowa House Committee Approves E-Verify Bill

A bill that would require employers in Iowa to use E-Verify passed through an Iowa House Committee on Tuesday. HF 2156 was offered by Rep. Julian Garrett and passed through the Committee mostly along party lines.

Mandatory E-Verify Still Stands in Fremont, Neb. After Lawsuit

A judge upheld part a Fremont, Nebraska 2010 ordinance that require all employers to use the federal E-Verify database to ensure employees are legal. U.S. District Judge Laurie Smith Camp rejected another part of the ordinance that would have denied housing permits to illegal immigrants.   

Texas Sheriff Leads National Fight to Save 287(g) Funding

Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia is leading an effort to block proposed budget cuts in the 287(g) program that has helped local law enforcements officers identify more than 275,000 illegal immigrants in their custody, The Houston Chronicle reported.

House Committee Misses Chance to Question Sec. Napolitano on Immigration Enforcement

The House Homeland Security Committee hosted a hearing Wednesday afternoon called “An Examination of the President's FY 2013 Budget Request for the Department of Homeland Security” with DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano.The President's budget essentially cuts all 287(g) funding despite an overwhelming bipartisan vote in the House last year to keep the program. With little chance for the budget to pass, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle didn't put too much pressure on Sec. Napolitano, missing an opportunity to ask hard questions of the Administration and its efforts to curb illegal immigration.
